The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge began in 1645 when a group of eminent British thinkers started to meet regularly in London to discuss the new, experimental philosophies of science. Though the English Civil War and the Cromwellian Protectorate interrupted its meetings, the Society was formally constituted in 1660.
